Subject: RE: Swath forage sorgum?

North Central Nebraska
We chopped sedan last year for the first time by swathing it and then using a pickup head. We learned a lot the first couple days lol. We used a JD 3960. First problem we had was our winrows were so big the chopper couldn't chop fast enough for the trucks. Our trucks are kinda high geared yours might b lower. Smaller winrow and higher ground speed works better for everything though. Also getting the crimpers set right took a couple passes. We ran the head up against the winrow we had just cut to make them smaller and had the chute set up to make winrow as narrow as possible. That helped a lot. In the beginning we were over crimping it and the pickup head wouldn't feed well. Id make a few passes and the try and chop it b4 u went crazy mowing so you get everything set right. We started out with a hydra swing and a self propelled cutting and ended up have a neighbor bringing his self propelled disc mower over because the chopper would out run the 2 sickle machines. Once you get it all figured out it goes pretty smooth but it was definitely a learning curve for us. We did just short of 2000 ton in 6 days and figure we could cut that in half knowing what we know now.
