I have an email from a Pioneer Field Agronomist in my region that tells me it's counted from emergence so that has been my understanding. I will ask him to verify that for me again.
I think planting date is a poor starting point to count from when talking about true growth and development. Lots of sources of variability in GDU's from planting to emergence, which then just throws everything off from there on obviously.
That said, I can appreciate why the industry would want to use planting date, it's easier from a producer standpoint as everyone has their planting date but few actually probably document their emergence date.
