All kinds of things can happen to gauges. Had a 1000 gallon ammonia tank that the baffles inside broke out and were rattling around inside. They eventually got on the gauge float and damaged it.
I don't think there's any difference in the tank part of the gauge between the two materials. The face can be changed pretty easily.
