They had IH engines until late 1989.
If the combine has big numbers on the side it has an IH engine. If the numbers are small and in the black stripe it has a Cummins.
We had an early 1989 1640 with the Non-turbo IH engine. It was a gutless wonder.
I had one with the IH engine also and would agree with Kookier's assessment. It handled my 6 row 20" corn head but really struggled with the 18' bean platform.
