I agree that the township and country road destruction in Nebraska and South Dakota is the really under-reported aspect of this. What people outside the region perhaps don't understand is that in many places the road destruction wasn't generally caused by a flood, per se, although some bridges and culverts were lost due to flooding. Additional damage in non-flooded areas was due to roadbeds that have been saturated for 14 months. They never got a chance to dry out and firm up, and the roadbeds are simply falling apart. Adding more gravel helps temporarily, but it is just putting a band-aid on a gaping wound. Field access is going to continue to be tough in many places, further slowing down planting. The problem is incredibly widespread. Pretty much every county between I90 and I80 has road issues, and possibly beyond both north and south. Thousands of sections affected. It'll be a good year to own a gravel pit.
