It will actually grip better with a smooth steering wheel. Just make sure your foam is nice and soft. If it’s a couple of years old, just put a new foam wheel on it. Also make sure you have the tension adjusted properly. You should have approx 1/2 to 5/8” clearance when the motor is in the away position.
