south central IOWA | I've only got 1 bottle calf or should I say, my mom does....
Something that I've never seen but add it to my list of experiences. Check cows first thing in the morning and got a new calf that is an hour or so old. Cow has a nice udder so I don't bother them. Check cows again around noon and no new calves. Check again around 5 or 6 and got a new calf that's maybe an hour old just trying to get up for the first time but no cows around. He's about 10 yards away from where the cow was that morning that calved but she is across the pasture with her calf.
Only thing I can think of since no other cow is claiming the calf is that she had twins about 10 hours apart. Took the calf over to her. She was interested in it but it was ready to suck and when it tried she kept kicking it away. So I said f-you cow and took him to the barn where he waits for a mom that will love him.
