I wouldn't be without my own scanner. I've scanned so many old photos and vintage ads that I am on my second scanner already. They do wear out apparently. Got old negatives or slides that you don't have prints of? The scanner will turn them into a jpeg that you can print if you want. A good editing program (like Adobe lightroom) can vastly improve the quality of some of the old photos that were under or over-exposed originally. Add colour, change to black and white. So many options when you do it yourself.
