Tamworth NSW Australia

No irrigation where the plane flew, only dryland crops and pasture.

There is irrigation to the east along the river flats of the Peel river that runs through Tamworth. Not a very large area and water comes from the dam that is also Tamworths water supply so water is very expensive and growing competition for it as Tamworth grows. They really only irrigate high value crops such as Lucerne and orchards not for field crops due to the cost of water. Tamworth city owns a farm to the west where they run a few pivots to dispose of the city effluent.

I'm not sure why but people want to live in the cities and there is more demand than supply, especially in Sydney and Melbourne. Apparently 85% of our population live within 30 miles of the coast, that's ok with me, gives the rest of us more room here in the bush.
