Battle Creek, IA | I don't have much for cattle shed room, and can only fit 4-5 pairs in my calving shed so I have to kick some out to make room pretty regular. I can only keep them in there a day at best before I have to move them. Thank goodness my calving is starting to slow down a little. A little over 1/3 done, but I think they might be slowing down. Started 3-1.
I have gotten to where I put pairs in a large pen until the calves are 3-4 days old and move them to a large yard at that point with a calf shelter. With this weather coming in, I thought the kicked out calves need something.
Just works for 4 calves, and so far the cows haven't torn it apart. I think if it was much deeper, they would, but they can stick there head in and check on the calves the way it is, so it works.
Good luck to the rest of the guys calving. Sure hard to get any sleep. At least my herd is small enough I can keep everyone alive and going, just can't sleep much...…… I feel for you guys with big herds.
