East of Broken Bow | My niece has a Subaru. It doesn't seem to have as many frills and electronic doo-hickeys that some other new cars have, but what it does have, seems to me to be practical, and simple to work (you don't have to go through a bunch of touch screen menus to turn the heater fan up or down, for instance).
Her boyfriend is a bit of a gear head, and he says that the CVT transmissions that Subaru uses are very reliable, if they get proper maintenance. The CVT mechanism runs in fluid. and he says it is important to change the oil by the book, and to use the proper Subaru CVT fluid. The Subaru stuff isn't cheap, but it only uses like 3 quarts or something like that, and only every 25,000 miles.
On used ones, I guess there is one engine to avoid, it has a weak head gasket, and the flat engine layout tends to make them oil burners compared to a V-style engine, especially as they get miles on them, but there are a lot of them out there with 200,000 miles, and no major repairs. | |
