If the plants have a heavy frost on them, the plants will turn black where you run over them. In certain conditions, those tracks can show for quite a while.

Frozen plants as long as they are dry don't seem to be affected much. Smaller is better.

Here is a picture of some of our winter wheat at top dressing time last year. Taken on the 10th of March.
