SE South Dakota
I just purchased a laptop for the same reasons (I'm the millennial on the farm, this is the one decision I get to make lol)

Top things to look for in a laptop for SMS or GIS activities:
- i-7 processor
- 16GB of RAM (minimum)...best if expandable but not a must
- Minimum of 256GB SSD. You will need more than 256GB of memory for SMS etc. but SSD gets spendy and additional memory needs can be met with a regular old hard drive or even an external hard drive. SSD is best for boot (aka starting programs up) but unnecessary for most other uses. Save yourself some $.
- An overlooked aspect is battery life. Running heavy programs like SMS will give you about half of the battery life that the manufacturer claims. i.e. 7 hours claimed = 3.5 hours IRL.

Other things to consider:
Ability to add parts to the computer in the future. This may seem far off if you aren't super computer literate, but adding additional hardware to your computer is as simple as removing screws and plugging parts in...it can save you a good amount of $ in the future by having the ability to improve your laptop.

Here are the two laptops I was choosing between:

https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-Overclockable-Aeroblade-PH315-5...

https://www.walmart.com/ip/MSI-GF63-8RC-264-Performance-Gaming-Lapto...

I went with the MSI because it went on sale for $750 a few weeks ago. Good luck. Hope it takes you less time to make this decision than it took me.
