E. CO, exactly half way between NE and OK | 50 years ago today I quit my job and moved home to start farming. What the h*** was I thinking! A guy from Kansas land was coming out of the Soil Bank and he needed someone to farm it. I rented it from him and plowed it. My dad told me that I should keep my job. I ended up buying that land (seven quarters) in '71 for $50 per acre. I borrowed $55,000 from FHA at 5%. My neighbor that was a big wheat farmer ask me what I gave for the land and I told him I borrowed $55,000 and he said that is a lot of money. I told him I didn't have anything what did I have to lose. I am sure he thought he could buy it when I lost it, I would have to agree with him. |
