They sure as hell DO check you around here. Pull out the portable scales, then the tape measure. Then, if the numbers are funky, you get to sit in their vehicle and sign citations (BTDT).
Sometimes they check, sometimes they don't.
Also, just FYI, during the fall when the state gives the "exemption" for heavier weights, they will check to see if you're in compliance with the added weight. Not daily, but it's been done. The fine goes all the way back to 80 if you go over the exempted weight.
