Subject: RE: Great plains turbo chopper as a clod buster

Southern Illinois
Here in southern IL the implements with beaters or choppers like the McFarlane Reel Disk, Turbo Chopper are not made to handle lots of dirt. They really work well beating up what they till with the front blades and that is about it. In several cases running a second pass or after another tillage tool causes the beater to load up and dump, load up and dump, creating a large washboard that really pisses off the planter guy, sprayer guy, and combine guy. Taking the shields off the back of the reel disk helps some by letting the dirt out faster but still can cause washboarding. The turbo chopper is a little better but not immune to the issues excess tilled dirt causes. Also anything with a beater is a maintenance issue. We have good luck with Landoll Tillol's but man they eat a lot of parts and you need to get at least a 25' to get a level job. Sunflower used to have a finisher that had a chopper after the sweeps before the harrow that did a great job. Have you thought about an 8 or 16 bar pull type spike harrow? These are all experiences from HERE, your results may differ. I have also noticed increased compaction from the beater type tools reel disk and turbo chopper.
