Subject: RE: John Deere 8970

CENTRAL ILLINIOS
The main complaint with them was the electronic governor that was not great when working right and kind of expensive to repair. On ours when you cut the throtttle it would slow down too much and sometimes die. The fix was to replace the injection pump with an old style mechanical pump with a cable to control the engine speed like used on the 8960. Yours may have already been switched. The other thing is Deere does not carry parts for the Cummins. That can be good and bad - a lot of parts like belts and water pumps can come from an auto parts store but some stuff has to come from Cummins.
Ours has been a pretty reliable workhorse overall but had to be overhauled last year due to cylinder wall cavitation.
