Iowa | I have a bulk bin and flex auger that was used for drop feeders for sows 10 years ago. Fast forward, we are now trying to use it for some holstein fats. So that involves some whole shell corn and pellets. We removed the drop feeders, and just using the flex auger to deliver the shell corn/pellet mix to a bunk at the end of the line in a cattle shed. Flex auger comes out of bulk bin at a little less than a 45 degree angle. The problem is we just cannot get the auger to deliver this shell corn mix with any decent volume. We have the slide gate at the bottom of the bulk bin almost all the way closed. Barely dribbles any corn out of the end of the auger. If I open the gate, it overloads the motor. Motor is good, flex auger has been limped along enough that it is shined up. What is the problem? Is the corn flowing backwards at the 45 degree incline, and filling the auger? Where the drops had been, we just patched over with some old pvc. Is the corn kernels dropping in that slight recess and making it pull that much harder? We don't know what to try next? Any suggestions? | |
