Free stalls no way would I ever put milk cows on pen pack again. Only disadvantage is slop manure in winter. Other than that it's all advantages. Non organic bedding with sand cows are cleaner no bedding to make just call for sand! I have 60 stalls in a barn. Concreted gutter shut and pour a 1 foot tall curb put in some posts and ran 2x12s on them and hung my hoops. Have a mench sand shooter bucket. Clean every day with tire scraper to a manure catch area on end of barn. These are dry cows not milk cows but I feed in h bunk with tmr kick cows out then 2 passes to scrape it swing gates back and I'm done. I can hold almost 4 weeks manure depending on rain/snow! I know the up front cost is higher on the free stalls but what I save in labor making bedding/doing the bedding added manure hauling and the equipment to make bedding it sure is nice but again the upfront cost is tough to look at.
