| A Gripple would cost less, but I don’t see why the ratchet strainer wouldn’t be the best option for your conditions. The Strainrite XT1 ratchet can go on anywhere in the fence line without cutting the wire, so they are pretty handy for repair work. So long as you don’t try to roll up a mile in one, they take barbed wire just fine. The better the wire, the less need for springs, but conditions would certainly dictate that. The first generations of HT wire were too stiff to absorb impact or thermal expansion/contraction without breaking or going beyond their stretching capability, while modern wire has “softened” as much as 25% to make for a better all around fence wire that tightens easier, and stays tight. | |
