he will need an external phone modem like someone else mentioned or he will need to pull the old phone modem from his old PC and slap it in the new one
XP should have the drivers for it and do a driver install really easy.....VISTA WHO KNOWS it might be easy it might not be compatible depending on the age of the old PC and modem
Old phone jack to ethernet ?
