A young adult author, Gordon Korman, wrote a series about 10 years ago that heavily featured dairy farms. Would it have killed the guy to at least have visited a dairy farm to see what it's like? Or to have gotten a dairy farmer to proof read certain sections of his books? He went into detail about the main character milking a cow. The cow looks back at him, moos at him, then wallops him into the gutter. That's not the way a cow works.

This same author, in another book, was describing a fugitive's escape from his captors in the engine room of the titanic. He started trying to describe the parts of this engine, using words that sounded cool but were used completely out of context. All it would have taken was a 5 minute search and he would have found plenty of data on what that engine room actually looked like.

You'd think this is what an editor is for; to make sure the book is up to snuff before it's published. But no...
