.   I use only waxless skis and IMO that's the only way to go.   Unless you're into racing, you can get by with a good pair of waxless skis.    We've been using waxless since the early 90's

And as others said, get the right length skis and poles.   You don't need anything fancy, just the right fit, and comfortable shoes.   Gaters are a great help too.
