Subject: Feeding Heifers vs Steers

Looking to buy some feeders in the very near future. I typically have fed heifers in the past. I looked at the spread of heifers vs steers. I am looking to purchase 5-6 wts and the spread between heifers and steers is $120-$160/ hd. I understand that a steer will perform better and will have a cheaper COG and that heifers cost more to feed. I also understand that a steer will weigh 100-200# more when they are sold as fats. However, I am a small time feeder who uses borrowed money and I have limited funds (unlike most of the folks on NAT :) ) Since that is the case I can afford more heifers than steers. So my question is: What criteria do you use when deciding to purchase a heifer vs. a steer? I am unsure as to how a person goes about figuring the proper spread between the two. If somebody could get me pointed in the right direction. I will be selling these cattle on hanging weight if that makes any difference. TIA
