Northeast Missouri
I use an external drive that you can hotswap SATA drives into...some people call them "toasters" because the drive drops in from the top like a piece of bread in a toaster. And I have 3 or 4 one- to two-terrabyte backup drives that I rotate through about once per week or so, depending on how much computer work I've been doing. (I always have at least 2 of the drives stored out of the house, in a barn and/or the shop.)

I use a ShadowProtect (installed in Win 7) to do the backups in Win 7. Great product. It takes a volume snapshot of the whole drive, then does the backup even if I'm using the PC, though I have it set to start backups around 2:00 am. It emails me a backups report once a week--sometimes a backup fails due to the drive being full, etc. You can configure ShadowProtect to backup just parts of your hard drive if you want. It's been great; I've used it for 2 years now, and I don't have to think about backups...I just have to remember to swap out the backup drive every once in a while.

And yes, I have done restores from it. Worked fine.
