Oregon | We have around 50 acres of pasture that I would like to increase production on. It is filled with cheat grass. Depending on snow pack, we can flood irrigate out of a creek from April 1 to around July 15. I would like to grow some kind of forage for mid-July gathered cows, make dry hay, or both. My thought now is to let the cheat green-up, spray-out end of March, and then no-till in the crop. I would go in now with a winter grain but am worried the cheat will choke it out in the spring. We have a no-till drill on 7.5 spacing with a grass bin I can broadcast out of and a ring roller behind that. I am throwing around the idea of a millet or oats with a legume. This is in Eastern Oregon. What do you suggest? Thank you. | |
