I think I've seen one pulled before without the split, but there is a lip cast into the side to catch oil that prevents the shaft from coming out. I once saw one that someone ground back the lip to remove the shaft and then remade it with jb weld after the new shaft was put in. I wouldn't recommend it, but it can be done.


Edit to add:

Pirlbeck is probably correct about the shift rails, but i thought the guy who had worked on that tractor i saw was trying to keep from splitting it when removing the top shaft. It was almost 25 years ago so i might have forgotten some details.
