WY, OK | On one of mine I bought a steel tool box to keep a small car battery in and use a 5 watt harbor freight panel to keep it charged. If worried about theft I could lock the tool box and bolt it down. Panel costs $20 so who cares if it got stolen in some odd chance. Probably have $100 in the box, battery and panel. Just about everyone down here in OK has one on their fence by the gate. The one I have in WY, with the tool box, all sits on the ground kind of out of view and hasn't been stolen yet. The easiest and most expensive thing to steal is the opener itself but you can buy a pin lock for that.
When you get the cheaper $20 panel just attach it directly to the battery, no need to worry about the way the Factory ones wire through the opener. I bought a threaded post battery and just put the eyelet ends right on the post and threaded down. No clamp that can come off that way.
