Forgive my ignorance, because I honestly don't understand a lot of other types of farming well, but what is the obsession with straight trucks instead of semi's?

Several advantages in the Manitoba context.

1)Anybody with a basic drivers license can legally drive a farm plated straight truck.
2)Straight truck does not need an annual safety if farm plated.
3)Straight truck can pull up to four axle pup, still on basic drivers license.
4)Semi requires Class 1 license with air endorsement, no exception for farm use.
5)Semi tractor requires annual safety. Not sure on trailer requirements.
