We've had it all.  Hughes was so-so, then got miserable.  They upgraded us to Gen4.. it was a slight bit better... for about a week and then when you hit your cap the throttle was so slow that some web pages wouldn't load correctly.  A NAT thread with a handful of pictures wouldn't even load correctly, would get the little red X's for about half the pics.  Jumped to Exede.. was easily twice the service of Hughes, but was still slow.  Could typically watch a lower-quality youtube video at least.  No TV streaming service at any speed.  Both Hughes and Exede cost us around $125-150 a month for something that wasn't even really useful.  Got a cellular router.. wouldn't pick up 4g/LTE even though our phones do... rep said the cell router looked for a different tower.  Got lucky and a found out about a different rep who was helping people in our area.  He introduced us to the mobile hotspot.  Got us one, tried it for a month.  Still throttles once you hit a certain GB, which we hit in two days typically with 2 kids and 2 adults with devices and TV's and whatnot... we learned that one hotspot would run two TV's streaming Netflix/hulu/prime or whatever no problem.  These things have very small broadcast range though, and more than 2 walls or 20 feet or so from them makes for slow transfer.  We were so happy with the performance of the one, we bought another and put it on the far end of the house, so the kids share that one and our bedroom and living room share the first.  We all watch what we want, when we want, all month long, doesn't matter if it's raining or snowing unlike the satellite.  We tested the pair of them together for about 6 weeks and never had a hiccup, and then dropped our DirecTV setup, at one time we paid $325 a month for DirecTV and satellite internet.. now we pay $25 a month x2 for the "mifi" hotspots, and about $40 a month for subscription services to the above mentioned streaming services, so instead of $325 and complaining about nothing being on TV and the internet not working, there's always something to watch and the internet always works for everyone, for less than $100.  We've tried Sling and Fubo, but we just don't watch enough live TV to get anything out of it.  Netflix and Hulu are probably the most used in our home.  I hardly ever sit down and watch anything, but I can sit and watch The Ranch over and over if it gets nasty out!

If a wifi router will work in your area, that's the way to go probably, but if you need to use the little hotspots, they're fine as well.  They say they're not designed to be plugged in and used full time like a router, but we've not had any issue with that.  One runs my weather station and our home thermostat so they are sending/receiving 24 hours a day and no issues.  If we take a long trip the kids will toss one in the car on a charger and have internet available on the road.  Whatever you use internet for, turn on your phone hotspot and hook it up, if it'll run what you want the little hotspots will serve you well.
