| Many experts now say forget Anti-virus software. By design, AV have hooks deep into the kernel of the operating system. With vulnerabilities within the AV industry, hackers can get right into your computer through the software that's meant to protect you. Personally, I have been relying on M$ Windows Defender, which is free. I have had no issues or problems doing this.
The best security software is between your ears and the mouse-clicker finger. Your own behavior can reduce/eliminate issues within your computer. Not falling for fishing e-mails (You've been hacked, click this link immediately to change your password, etc).
Best practices for your security include "TWO FACTOR AUTHENTICATION" which is free from all web-sites. This link has specific instructions on setting up two factor on web-sites - https://techguylabs.com/blog/how-set-two-factor-authentication
Good, strong passwords is your next best practice. "Last Pass" is one software that creates, then keeps track of incredibly hard passwords for your e-mail, bank, credit-card, broker, etc web-sites or software. All you have to remember is the one Last Pass password which lets you log-in. After that, Last Pass remembers your passwords for every other program/web-page you set-up. If you have multiple individuals who have access to your mission-critical web-sites, Last Pass lets you (as administrator) give access to these web-pages, or remove their permissions if needed. And you can give permissions two some pages, while denying access to others.
Now, the thing I LOVE about Last Pass, beside the super impossible passwords, if Heaven-forbid, something happens to you - stroke, death, etc - Last Pass lets you set-up a designated survivor. If your survivor requests access to your accounts, Last Pass will e-mail your account saying, "Hey Dude, Are you okay? George says you're dead and wants access to your money." Last Pass will only give your designated survivor access to your e-mail, bank, broker etc if you do not reply to Last Pass' e-mail inquiry of your status within xx days.
Finally, your best security software is good, consistent back-ups. Three-Two-One
THREE copies (including the original)
TWO different types of media - hard-drive and a thumb-drive; or hard-drive and cloud
ONE copy is kept off-site (in case of fire, tornado, hurricane, earthquake or theft)
Many businesses will take their back-up tapes to the night-depository with the bank deposits each night. The bank will give the tapes back the next day, thus you're protected.
Best regards!
