I haven't personally worked with one, but I've heard the same thing. I believe it would plug into the 4400 product cable rather than the console cable, but could be wrong on that.
I believe you are correct as the sex of the pins might be such that they wouldn't mate. Seems that I was asked to make a short adapter that was a 37 pin male to male some years ago.
