Subject: Feed alley

West Salem, Illinois
Probably not the correct terminology, but in my little corner of the world guys build alley ways with a set of bunks or a wall to feed and trap cows. So my question is would twelve feet be enough width? The idea is that a timid cow would have enough alley behind the boss cows to find a spot further down the bunk, yet be narrow enough to sort cows if needed. Also, my idea was to pour fifteen feet width overall the last three feet would be raised six inches to act as a wall to scrap against and also to raise the bunk floor, for the bunk my idea is to do a spin on Garvo’s design and use my form boards to make the bunk sides. My thought is three foot per cow, this would be for winter limit feeding silage and occasionally a splash of grain to use as bait to trap the cows. This could have calves using it with the cows so what neck spacing would be best for mature cow down to a couple month old calf?
