Sanilac Co. Michigan | Wow! You mean to say there's no perforated metal under where the hydro sets? Somebody must've gotten tired of crud building up in there, so took the bottom out.
No wonder your fan is sucking crap into it. That's like, 100% of your problem! Find you some perforated panels with about the same size holes as the bomb bay doors, frame them and attach it under the hydro.
I don't think hardware screen is going to be tough enough to stand up to tall stalks and stubble. Going to need like 16 gauge galvanized or heavier to stay rigid.
