Subject: RE: Smart firmer experience

Central Illinois
I used 4 smart firmers on a 16 row planter this spring. The O.M. readings were believable and I variable rate planted according to the O.M. after a few rounds of seeing the O.M. levels. Will see at harvest if the population makes any difference. I have not liked the Climate prescription maps as they are too dependant on prior yields and I want to use soil type, topography and O.M. If just O.M. can do the job...we'll see. I have been told Precision is still working on smoothing the O.M. map or data. The trench moisture was no problem this spring since my soils were plenty wet. So no need to plant deeper to get moisture. Perhaps in a dry year it would be helpful. We could play with the Clean Sweep and see different results with the clean furrow but other Precision factors, like Delta Force settings and good ride (maybe it is SRI) were more critical. Overall, I'm hoping smart firmers will open more doors for doing a great job of planting.
