I think it's mostly that almost every village now has someone with a drone to see and record them.
The last time it was widely this dry would be 1995 or 1976, though dryish spells aren't unusual - but perhaps at the 'wrong' time for crop marks.
I've noticed that the marks may still only be visible quite briefly as crops pass through stages of ripening.
