North Central IL | Yes, the trade of soybeans in global, and China is only one player. If the market is allowed to figure out how many beans go where and for what price, that is the optimal solution. Add tariffs into the mix and the solution is different and less than optimal than before.
Tariffs create inefficiencies in the market. They cause resources to be allocated in less than optimal ways and they create "Dead Weight Loss" because of those inefficiencies. In the end these Tariffs will cost both U.S. producers and Chinese consumers. So, in the end we may export as many soybeans as we have in other years, but it will be at a lower price than if there had been no tariffs. | |
