I used a treated 2x12 at the trailer end of my loading ramp. Filled it with limestone screenings. Works well.  My Cornpro trailer has a flexible rubber bumper along the rear bottom edge that comes right up to the 2x12 so no place to get a hoof down between the trailer and the ramp.
