Can I legally put used oil on the road in front of my house? And if I can will it be as effective as what they put on roads to control dust. I want this for dust control. I’ve got plenty of used oil on hand I just give away anyway so might as well use it for myself if I can.

Depends on your state and county laws, but I would doubt it.

Aside from any environmental concerns, it seems anything cheap and easy gets licensed, banned, and enforced by the few big companies that hold the licenses to make an expensive job of what you used to be able to do for yourself.

Ah, saw this in an old thread now:

No. And people will be able to tell, when it rains it will leach out and kill grass on the sides.

If you want to oil it get some used fryer oil.

Is that why you never see any grass growing in the ditch along any interstate highway in the US? ; - ) Maybe we should ban asphalt roads because of the oil leaching as well.

You can not in Story county but I don't have a clue if that's a county rule or state. I don't ever recall seeing dead grass back when we were allowed to and oil worked better than the sticky crud they use now.

Paul iscorrect, depends upon state & local regulationd. Before our road was paved we were allowed to put down oil in front of our house. Had to be an oil that passed specific regulations. Neigh oring county in Illinois did have a program where residents could have the road in front of their home oiled by the county, not sure if county, home owner paid or if it was joint. For awhile our local soybean board sold soyoil to be applied on gravel for dust control

We put approved oil in front of our house for several years, never once saw the grass turn yellow. Road in front of the house eventually became like black top. So much so I used black top patching to fix any potholes

Pretty sure not. Our county had notices in the paper that made it sound like you couldn't even spray your own approved product, you had to hire one of their approved applicators.

Black Hawk County, IA
"Here" you have to approved by the county to apply one of the "accepted" dust control products. You also need proof of insurance, and a bond. We are one of the approved applicators, and used oil is considered a toxic substance here, and the liability if someone slides off the road also keeps oil from being used. Each county is different, by I'd check first. J

Road oil is more like “Bunker Fuel” than engine oil.

I had some chloride from tractor tires stored in a tote. I made a road sprayer so I could get rid of it. It did a decent job last year, and I can still see where I sprayed. I didn't ask permission, but county uses chloride also. Used oil has been a no no for quite a while.

Thanks for all of the replies everyone, I kind of knew what everyone was going to say but was hoping at least one would ”heck yes put it on”, I guess I’ll continue to give my oil away,.

I would just use the oil for how you want to use it. (I tend to do on my land whatever the heck I want to do.) As other posters have stated the oil will kill the grass along the edge so you won't have to mow along the roadway either its a win win!!! *****Note Sarcasm****

You maybe cant use it. But you cant control when you have an oil line fall off the tractor in front of your place!

Years ago a ahole dumped a bunch of used oil on the road. I drove threw it with my new pickup in the dark. Took me half day to clean my pickup. County charge him for two loads of gravel to cover it.
