Subject: Re: Best corn dryer

Montevideo, MN
I never had the courage to let corn steep that long. At a rate of dumping 1000 Bu per hour even in our 48' bins. If I waited 12 hours that would give me a little over 8' of very hot grain. That was just too scary for me. What we did was wait about 3 hours after we started drying and then turned the fans on. That worked fine. There gets to be a lot of trial and error involved with dumping hot corn. I pretty much had it figured out so that I knew how hot I had to have a certain moisture corn. We would just check the discharge temperature every other load and never worried about any discharge moisture readings. When we would haul it out in the summer it was always between 14.5 & 15.5%. 17% corn only needs to get to about 115-120 degrees but 25% corn needs to get to about 155 degrees. Don't go much over 155 or test weight will suffer. Varieties make a difference when it comes to drying. They all act a little differently.
