My son plans on plowing down the current stand that is not very good and I don't believe this will work as old disease's in the old roots will kill the young alfalfa would burning it down first work or is this just not a good idea.
Alfalfa plants over 6-9 months old put out toxins that kill young sprouting alfalafa seeds for an average 20 inch circle around the old plant most of the time.
It takes 3 months of no live alfalfa plants/ roots in good growing weather for those toxins to fade away and one can replant alfalfa with reasonable confidence of it working.
Once in a long, long while the stars align just right and seeding alfalfa into standing alfalfa works out with special weather conditions or dumb luck, so one can't say it -never- works out.
But, it's probably not a good idea, or has a good chance of working well.
