I don't know but I'll put this out there.
Couple years ago I had an old stand, maybe two plants per square yard, rest was orchard grass. We had a dry summer and I never took off the third cutting, the alfalfa set seed.
Forward to the following spring and the new seedlings were thicker than hair on a dog.
I tore it up but always wondered what would have happened if I had left it.
