| After you get your new augers, make up some 4" plastic pipe tubes with a cap glued on one end and a clean out on the other. Make them about 4 to 6 inches longer than the auger assembled on that square shaft. Then after you use your fertilizer augers, take them out and put them in the plastic tubes and fill them up with used motor oil thinned down with diesel fuel and cap them.
We put new augers in our planter about 15 years ago and they haven't got a spec of rust on them because they are only out of the oil/diesel fuel for a couple weeks out of the year. Those cast auger pieces are still free on the square shaft, I could take them apart easily if I needed to but they will likely last forever with this treatment. | |
