We used to plant some corn with 400 lbs of 19-19-19 2x2". Stuff always took off great, maybe we got lucky with weather etc., where it suffered is if you didn't get it sidressed timely. Best thing to do is trial starter on your farm which it sounds like you're doing. If I was a risk taker trying to plant super early I'd use some starter.
