The transition is often easier if someone has already proven to be there frequently to give the person a ride, and not to always be in a big rush and impatient to get them hurried back home. When they see they're not stranded at home for a week or two at a time, with only the chance to rush to the store or the hairdresser and right back home, giving up the keys may not be as big of a deal to accept. If someone thinks it shouldn't be a big deal to accept, then give up your own keys for several months in a row, always relying on someone else to take you one or 2 places, but only leave home once a week or two and then race back home. The situation will become more clear.

Spending the time to take someone where they want to go, not rushed and willing to patiently stop additional places besides what was originally planned, does take the time of the driver. However, that's just a part of caring for someone who lives in their own home and isn't able to drive. For many caregivers, it is a priority they are willing to establish and put other things lower on their list. No one can say it is always simple to do.
