Back in 1961, soil scientists at NC State decided they were going to create some deep fertile soils in Laurenburg, NC by incorporating lime and fertilizer several feet deep.
The photo at the following link shows the big day when the deep tillage occurred.

An emeritus professor (who confided that he'd had high expectations at the time) told me that the result was a disaster. The high clay and extremely low OM B horizon soil hardened up like a rock... and over 40 years later, crops still grow poorly in this field !!
