Finally got it apart. Looks like the inner bearing casting of the hub failed first. It's a Cat 4 CNH axle but what a POS. Our 5240 has held up to actual abuse for 20 some years.
Loader was ordered with tractor. This is a used tractor we just got last fall. It's been moving 1500# bales all winter but apparently a bucket full of sand was too much
