Subject: RE: Calmer Rolls--Are they worth it?

NE Iowa
Does anyone have experience planting no-till beans following corn harvested with Calmer's rolls? Currently have fluted rolls on my 893, but am thinking they may need some attention before next Fall. We no-till the beans with a 16x15" JD 7000 with no row cleaner or coulters - 1st thing to hit the trash are the double disc openers. Usually run with the old corn row putting a bean row 7 1/2' either side of the old corn row. Years ago, the amount of corn stalk debris was such that this resulted in a well planted field of beans. Lots more fodder to deal with today (Bt corn, fungicide use, etc). Still get the beans planted ok, but not hard to find some on top of trash. Am also rolling them right after planting.

Bottom line is will the mat of 2-3" trash that the Calmers leave behind deteriorate enough by Spring for our planter to get through it ok and get beans planted in the dirt instead of leaving them on top of the straw?

BTW - this is East Central Iowa.

Thanks,
Chris
