That question came up on another site, and several replied that engines that use all roller or ball bearings can run on the lean oil mixture. The problem comes when you are dealing with an older 2 cycle engine that has sleeve bearings and needs more oil to keep those sleeve bearings alive.
You may have to keep two mixes, too much oil is no good for the newer motors because of fouling and carbon buildup and too little will kill the old engines.
