The scariest part of growing flowers for me has been the fact that you put most all of your expenses in up front. With that said.........nowadays with most row crops having pre chemicals/etc. it is not all that different than growing corn or milo. However with sunflowers we sometimes have trouble getting a stand. They seem to be finicky but I think we've narrowed it down to waiting too long into summer to plant. If the soil gets hot it disorients the seed. Some never find their way up. With regards to fire.........if you have good oil you probably will have to deal with watching for fires. We keep the grain cart pretty close to the combine and just keep an eye on it. We've caught ours smoldering several times but if you keep the trash off the machine it never turns into an open flame. We do keep a couple of water fire hydrants close by. It definitely adds adventure to harvest but at times it has been well worth it. Probably the single best thing about sunflowers is the fact that if you start with a full profile and get a good stand you will more than likely grow a good crop even if it gets dry later. It will leave your field really dry in that situation for your following crop but at least you created some revenue that year and you can cross that other bridge later.
